Maritime surveillance is the maintenance of security in the sea by conducting patrols, detecting the presence of enemies and locating them. The surveillance is done by the navy forces and the air-force, the navy use ships and submarines to patrol the sea whereas the air-force use the aircraft to patrol the sea. The maintenance of the sea was deemed importance internationally after the terrorist attack of the Times tower by terrorists and the rise in pirate attacks in the sea who target the trade goods’ ships. They attack the ship, steal the goods and torture the ships’ crew to death.
The patrols are conducted in the sea and it is intense at the hotspots or terror attack. The hotspots are normally along the trade routes as the ships import or export goods to or from the country. The other places of interest are, along the coastlines of the sea, the areas of economic activities near the sea such as; hotels, tourists’ destinations, fishing ships and shopping centers. The extend the patrol to those ares because the enemies may hide in those areas as well when they escape from the sea. They should also have tight security around their camps and vessels which are other targets of attack.
The Maritime surveillance conducts patrols in order to maintain the security of the country, ensuring that every citizen is safe from attack. Guided by their motto “By strength and guile” they have been involved in several wars and successfully managed to prevail against their enemies. In the present day it has been realised that major attacks have been redirected to take place from the sea hence the need for patrols in the sea. Trading of goods between countries all over the world largely depend on the sea for transport thus requiring tight security from the pirates.
The Maritime surveillance team is not limited to the security of the sea only, but also extends to other activities such as: rescuing the victims of a capsized ship, controlling fishing in the sea, patrolling the borders of the coastline, and inspecting any ship that sail in the sea. There are risks involved during the patrols because several of the team members may get killed during the mission. Thus there are measures put up to ensure their safety; the communication systems must be upgraded to match the latest technology to enhance efficient communication between the navy and the air-force. There should be maintenance personnel of the in case there are breakdowns during the patrol.
They are adequately trained to equip them with the appropriate techniques to use during an attack. They are heavily armed with the right weapons and other necessities of patrol. In case there is an attack they report to the responsible authorities and more personnel is deployed at the scene. The mission each member of the team is to protect the UK with zeal and make it their first objective, they are patriots and their desire is to enhance security in the country. There are more developments being introduced to improve the quality of service such as, putting up satellite surveillance.
